Question: Why do we rely so much on fossil fuel?

The answer is twofold.

  1.  Until today there has not been a more efficient way to store and transport energy than fossil fuels.
    .
  2.  As fossil fuels and nuclear power generate energy far from the source – who lives in a coal mine? – there is massive scope for financial manipulation along the chain of supply. This means that every time a rival energy source comes along, morally ambiguous politicians and business people do everything they can to stop the alternative fuel taking hold in case they lose their meal ticket. There is very little scope for corruption however if a homeowner places a solar panel on their roof an unplugs from the grid. It is undoubtedly good for society but reduces the income of those in the system who have other less scrupulous goals.

If that sounds like a conspiracy theory, it may be! But that doesn’t mean it is not true.

If renewable energy can be safely and conveniently stored after generation, then economic reality means that fossil fuels and nuclear power will inevitably fall like dominos. As we can see in the table above, they are both simply too inefficient to be with us for much longer as power sources.

The table above also gives not only a clear idea of where we are today but shows a clear path to where we are headed tomorrow.

Hydrogen fuel cells show incredible promise, not least because their sources of power are oxygen and hydrogen which are in virtually limitless supply, and their waste product is water.

Two other interesting facts deduced from the table above are the relative efficiencies of future solar, a passive, low maintenance energy source with zero pollution, and battery technology.

Battery Technology has become increasingly relevant in this modern‘mobile’ world.
